Mindfulness - buzz word or beneficial?

According to Wikipedia, Mindfulness is the psychological process of bringing one's attention to experiences occurring in the present moment, which one can develop through the practice of meditation and through other training. Intriguing or just a collection of fine sounding words, I ask myself.

Well here's a thing, I actually think there's a lot to like and learn from Mindfulness. Our modern world is fast paced; warp speed technology, entertainment at our finger tips and constant reminders of stiff competition, high achievers and lives lived via social media. Sure progress is great but so is slowing things down, hanging out with your dog, taking time to breathe, ponder on problems and goals or just wonder at the world around us.

I love people. I love being entertained and captivated by wit and conversation but more importantly I enjoy discovering something truly surprising about a person. In my humble opinion people always have a surprising hidden talent or have achieved something truly inspiring.

If Mindfulness teaches us anything, it's about savouring the moment and embracing the world and it's people around us. We are all individuals, wired differently and each with incredible talents, whether a great personal achievement or being able to name all the stations on the District Line.
